Visiting The Met? Welcome to The Met. Guided tours may have no fewer than 10 students and no more than 30 students , with one chaperone required for every 10 students. Groups will be divided into smaller pods in order to offer more individual attention to students and maintain safety in the galleries.

The Museum reserves the right to limit the number of adult chaperones participating in school group tours. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, am—3 pm. Closed Wednesday. Weekend appointments are not currently available. A social narrative PDF prepares students on the autism spectrum for a guided school visit. Limited self-guided school group reservations are now available at The Met Fifth Avenue!

Teachers and their students may explore the Museum's collection independently. To request a self-guided visit for your school group, please complete the School Group Visit Request Form above at least two weeks in advance. Lecturing is not permitted in special exhibitions.

The Museum cannot guarantee access to all galleries at all times. Each school is limited to one group visit of no more than 30 students per day. One chaperone is required for every 10 students. Groups larger than 15 must divide into smaller groups before entering the galleries. Experience with event ticketing and engaging with the public in a performing-arts setting is desired. Garden Volunteers assist horticultural staff at The Met Cloisters with garden maintenance, including weeding, deadheading, and sweeping paths. These volunteers are required to work half days three hours or full days five hours.

Only those who submit an online application will be considered for placement. The application requires a personal statement expressing why you wish to volunteer at The Met, and the interests, skills, and experiences you would bring to the position maximum words. The online application for Museum Department Volunteers will be available in mid-January Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and remain on file for one year. We regret that there may not be opportunities for all qualified candidates.

Note: The Volunteer Organization does not accept applications from high school, undergraduate, or graduate students. Tristate-area high school students are eligible to apply for high school internships. We also offer a number of internships for undergraduate and graduate students. We are looking for outgoing, reliable individuals with excellent interpersonal skills. We welcome candidates of all backgrounds, cultures, and abilities. Training to become a volunteer tour guide focuses on learning about art and how to engage with visitors as you lead them through the galleries. The yearlong training program includes lectures by curators, discussions, workshops, written assignments, and oral presentations. Training begins in September and may include both virtual and in-person sessions.

Please review the following Guided Tour Program descriptions to decide which best match your interests and availability. You must indicate your preferred programs in the online application form. Volunteers conduct regularly scheduled one-hour tours including a modified schedule during summer months. Tours are given Monday through Friday between 10 am and 4 pm. These tours feature highlights of The Met collection and are designed to provide visitors with a general introduction to the Museum.

Candidates for this program must be proficient in English and fluent in the language in which they wish to conduct tours. All training is conducted in English. These tours explore highlights of The Met Cloisters, the only American museum dedicated to Medieval art and architecture. This branch of the Museum is located in Fort Tryon Park in northern Manhattan accessible via the A train to th Street; free parking is also available. All school tours are given Monday through Friday, in English only.

Each guide is expected to lead one tour weekly during the school year and a total of two tours over the summer to camp and community groups. Guides introduce students in grades K—3 to art, culture, and history in the Museum through creative and thematic tours. These tours develop observational and descriptive skills and enable young students to discover connections among different cultures and foster an appreciation of the arts. These tours include sketching in the galleries. Guides lead a wide variety of thematic tours for students and provide engaging learning experiences while introducing works of art in The Met collection through lively discussions and multimodal activities.
