I shaked, rattled etc with the saw upside down in the hope it may fall out for 5 mins but being an oblong shape it wouldn't fall "end first" just on the big flat which wont come thru the sparkplug hole in that particular way.
For the sake of undoing the 4 cylinder screws after a few minutes of the above I thought why am I wasting my time doing this Maybe I just got a bad one. Im a bad boy normally and use a metal piston stop unless its a small saw in which case I use the string method. Worst one ive seen someone in there infinite wisdom decided if they wedged a screwdriver in thru the exhaust port over the top of the piston to do the clutch it would be fine so similar to yours Barry. Didn't really damage the port but the piston took a beating and was gouged and mildly pinched the ring in the groove..
If you are bad, then I am mega bad, as I seldom use a piston stop at all. I use the very bad method of an impact gun used with care or impact via a punch and large hammer. I know, I know.. But on the rare occasions I have resorted to a stop it has been a metal one, or starter cord.
Have got a Stihl one somewhere, but not sure where. No, there was a nice little bite out of the top of the port and a neat nibble on the piston edge with a deep vertical groove and pinched ring. It was an elderly, but much loved , but the customer prefers not to spend heavily on repairs of older kit, but to upgrade. On this occasion he actually crossed to the dark side and bought a XP. I have used the Stihl one for years, had them slip every now and then but they are generally good.
Zi use rope on Huskys when the clutch won't spin off easily as it stays in place when tapping on the clutch! I use some cord because it's what I have. For the scooter I use a spark plug with the ceramic broken off and a M6 bolt through it but I only use it to find TDC. I cut a socket down and made a clutch spanner for the which worked better than beating it with a drift. You need to be a member in order to leave a comment. It's easy! The tool is hard plastic and broke into two pieces the first time I used it. However, I can still use both pieces to do the same job so I guess it isn't a total disaster. I really don't like the idea of using the metal piston stopping tools so this tough plastic one is great. Stops the piston safely so you can remove the flywheel and install it.
I know you can put rope through the sparkplug hole to stop the piston but this is faster and a little more professional. Skip to main content. About this product. Make an offer:. Sold by dms62 The T is one I seen several over the years, and watched a guy do exactly that 30 seconds after I asked him not to Most of the "cast" key slot type on weeaters and small blowers will shear off - done a few of those myself.. Crofter Addicted to ArboristSite. Stuff in as much rope as you can ; it will do a better job of equalizing pressure and not be exerting force on maybe just one side of the squish zone.
Also the closer to top dead centre toggle over the greater the stresses on the piston and bearings. The further down the bore the better the crank angle advantage is in your favor. I've used the screw-in metal piston stop and the Stihl plastic thing is this the 'spoon'? Expect to use the rope sometime. I use both rope or metal piston stop. I have never damaged anything by using it NDtreehugger ArboristSite Guru.
I use them both There simple to make. I use an old spark plug drill and tap insert a bolt peen it down to keep them together and allow for removal grind round and smooth. Rotate the engine in the direction that you need it locked in until the piston is almost TDC and the fill the cylinder with oil through the spark plug hole.
Re-install the plug and you can SAFELY put whatever torque is necessary to remove or install either side without worries. I am not saying this is the cleanest method but I promise you will never damage a piston like this because the load is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the piston deck. I have done this for years on everything from RC car engines to snowmobile engines and it works like a charm every time without the "pucker feeling". I used a metal stop one time and it left a nice ding in the top of the piston luckily it was scored anyway.
The stop wasn't rounded over on the end ,it was flat and had a edge that dug into the piston. Now I only use rope and haven't had any problems. Bill G Addicted to ArboristSite. Joined Mar 5, Messages 9, Location Illinois.
