Your printer appears in the Printers and Faxes folder. The only difference between the manual installation of the print server and the use of the Configure Your Server Wizard to create the print server is how you start the Add Printer Wizard.

Skip to main content. This browser is no longer supported. If you cannot print from WordPad, see if you can print at a command prompt. Open a Command Prompt window window. Note If your printer is connected to a port other than LPT1, replace "lpt1" with the correct port. If you cannot print at a command prompt, try to Start Windows in Safe Mode and then try to print at a command prompt again.

Safe Mode helps you diagnose problems. If a symptom does not reappear when you start your computer in Safe Mode, you can rule out the default settings and minimum device drivers as possible causes. If a newly added device or a changed driver is the cause of the printing problem, you can use Safe Mode to remove the device or reverse the change.

Safe Mode This option uses only the basic files and the generic drivers that are required to run Windows Server on your computer. Safe Mode with Networking This option is the same as Safe Mode except that network connectivity also starts. To start Windows Server in Safe Mode, follow these steps: Note You may want to print these instructions before you restart your computer.

In the What do you want the computer to do? When you see the Please select the operating system to start message, press F8. For additional information about starting Windows Server in Safe Mode, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:.

Check the cables, switch boxes, and connections to make sure that all printer and network cables are securely connected. If you are connected to a switch box, try to remove the switch box, and then connect to the printer directly. If the self-test does not work, contact your printer manufacturer. To determine whether there is a problem with your printer driver installation, remove and reinstall your default printer driver.

To do this, follow these steps:. Right-click the default printer icon, and then click Delete. Note The default printer icon has a white check mark in a black circle in its upper-left corner. Double-click Add Printer , and then click Next.

Click Local printer attached to this computer , and then click Next. Click Use the following port , click the port that you want your printer to use, and then click Next. In the Manufacturer list, click the name of your printer manufacturer, and in the Printers list, click the name of your printer model. Click Next , and then click Yes to make this your default printer. Click Next three times, and then to indicate that you want to print a test page, click Yes. Test your printer by printing a document from WordPad. Click Use the following port , click the port that the printer is attached to, and then click Next. To make this your default printer, click Next , and then click Yes. If the test page does not print, contact your printer manufacturer for more information. If the test page prints correctly, test your printer by printing a document from WordPad.

If you can print from WordPad, try to print from your program. If you can now print from your program, your original printer driver is incorrect or incompatible with your computer. Contact the printer manufacturer for your printer for the latest compatible drivers. To check to make sure that your printer is using printer configuration files that are not corrupted, you must make sure that you have fresh copies of the printer configuration files on your computer To do this, follow these steps:.

Note The default printer icon has a white check mark in a black circle in upper-left corner. In the console tree, expand Services and Applications , and then click Services. In the Services pane, right-click Print Spooler , and then click Stop.

After you stop the spooler service, if you cannot delete the files and folders or if you receive a message that states that the files are in use, follow these steps. In the Services pane, double-click Print Spooler.

In the Startup type list, click Disabled , and then click OK. In the Startup type list, click Automatic , and then click OK. After you update the printer files, reinstall your printer. To install a printer driver, follow these steps:. Note If you are not sure of the manufacturer or the printer model, of if you do not see your printer model in the Printers list, see your printer documentation.

After you update the printer files for a network printer, you must create a local port. To create a local printer port, follow these steps:. Click Local printer attached to this computer , clear the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer check box, and then click Next. Note The server name is the name of the printer server and the printer name is the printer share name. Click the name of your printer manufacturer, and in the Printers list, click the name of your printer model.

If the test page does not print, you may have a network connectivity problem and you may have to contact your network administrator. If the test page prints, your printing problem may have occurred because of corrupted printer files.

Set this printer as your default printer, and then try to print from WordPad. If your printer prints a page with the words This is a test, your WordPad test is successful. If the WordPad test is successful, try to print from your program. If you cannot print from your program, then check the program. To check the available space on your hard disk to make sure that your computer has sufficient available disk space to print your document, follow these steps:.

Click Start , and then click My Computer. Note The system disk is wherever you installed Windows. It is typically drive C. A pie chart appears that indicates how much space on your disk is being used, and how much disk space is free. You want about 32 megabytes MB of free disk space to print a simple document. You may require more free disk space to print larger documents, such as documents that contain graphics.

We recommend MB of free disk space. Note that 1 gigabyte GB equals MB. If there is not sufficient disk space available, try to remove files and programs that you have to have. After you increase your available disk space, try to print from your program. At this point, you have determined that you can print from WordPad and that the printing issue seems to be specific to one program.

To troubleshoot problems in the program, think about what the printing problem is. For example, does your program print graphics correctly? Or, are you having problems with a particular font? Does the problem occur in only one document? Or, does the problem occur in all document in the program? As a test, try to print a blank page from the program.

If this prints correctly, the program may have problems with memory or with fonts. To determine where the printing problem is, do the following:. If you suspect a font problem, change the font of the text and try to print it again. Try this step with the different fonts in your program.

If the text does not print correctly when you use a specific font, then you may have a font problem. For additional information about how to test and how to reinstall fonts, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:. If the new document prints correctly, the problem may be specific to an existing document. To see if the issue is specific to something in an existing document, do the following:.

Copy and paste a section at a time of an existing document to a new document, and then try to print the new document. Repeat this step for different sections of your existing document. If you find that a section of your document cannot print in a new document, then you have a problem in that section of the document.

You may have to delete that section of the document and re-create the section. If your existing document contains graphics, copy and paste the graphic to a new document and then try to print the new document. Notes about printing When you print a document, the document may require more memory than your computer has available.

To free memory on your computer, try the following:. Close all other open documents in the program where you are trying to print from, and then try to print again. Restart your computer and start only the program where you are trying to print from.

Open the document and try to print again. To help isolate and solve problems with printers that are connected to the network, do the following:. Verify basic network connectivity. To do this, check user rights, protocols, and share names to determine whether you can see the server. Then, try to copy a file to the server. If you cannot access the server, you might not be able to access the printer.

On the Advanced tab, make sure that the printer availability time is correct. Create a local printer, and then redirect the port to the network server.

This step determines whether you can copy files from the print server. Check the available disk space on the print server. The printer objects are not easy to find in Active Directory Users and Computers. The object can be moved to any OU. All the configuration information is sent again to the Active Directory store even if some of it has remained unchanged. Creation and updating of printer objects happens relatively quickly, but objects and attributes must be replicated before they affect the results of a Find Printers operation from a client.

Replication latency depends on the size of your enterprise, and your replication topology. If a print server disappears from the network, its printer object is removed from the Active Directory.

The printer Pruner service confirms the existence of shared printers represented in Active Directory by contacting the shared printer every eight hours. A printer object will be pruned if the service is unable to contact the printer two times in a row. This might occur if a print server is taken offline. It will happen regularly if printers are shared on Windows or Windows XP workstations that are shut off overnight or on weekends.

However, a print server will recreate the printer objects for its printers when the machine starts, or when the spooler service is restarted. So, again, administrative intervention is not required. Printers that are added by using the Add Printer Wizard are published by default.

The Add Printer Wizard does not allow you to prevent the printer from being published to the Active Directory service when you install or add a printer. A printer connected to a local port is likely to be detected and installed automatically by Plug And Play. In this case, you must share and publish the printer manually using the Sharing tab. Simply right-click the OU or other container in which you want to create the printer and choose New Printer.

You should add only printer objects that map to printers on pre-Windows computers. Do not add printer objects for printers on computers running Windows or later; allow those printers to publish themselves automatically. All the default system behaviors described above can be modified using local or group policy. Printer policies are located in the Computer Configuration node, under Administrative Templates.

For a description of each of these policies, open the Properties dialog box for a specific policy and click the Explain tab. To prepare for printer location tracking, you must have one or more sites or one or more subnets. You must also configure the Location tab of the site or subnet Properties dialog box using a naming convention that creates a hierarchy of locations, separated by slashes.

A location may span more than one subnet, or more than one site. A Browse button will also appear, enabling a user to browse the location hierarchy for printers in other locations. This powerful feature simplifies printer administration and setup considerably. However, it obviously requires careful planning on the back end to ensure that all subnets are defined, and that a reasonable, hierarchical location naming convention has been applied consistently.

More information about this feature is available in the online Help and Support Center. Internet printing also gives administrators the option to manage and configure printers using any variety of Internet browsers and platforms. Internet printing is not installed or enabled by default in Windows Server Internet printing is available for installation when you install IIS. To install Internet printing, perform the following steps:. In the details pane, select Internet Printing, and click Prohibit or Allow.

Internet printing creates a Printers virtual directory under the Default Web site. The printer site is accessed using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4. After locating the desired printer and clicking it, a Web page for that printer is displayed. As a shortcut, if you know the exact name of the printer to which you want to connect, type the address of the printer using the following format:.

The printer that is installed is displayed in the Printers folder on the client. The printer can then be used and managed from the Printers And Faxes folder like any other printer. Using a Web browser to manage printers has several advantages:. It allows you to administer printers from any computer running a Web browser, regardless of whether the computer is running Windows Server or has the correct printer drivers installed.

It allows you to customize the interface. For example, you can create your own Web page containing a floor plan with the locations of the printers and the links to the printers. It provides a summary page listing the status of all printers on a print server. Internet printing can report real-time print device data, such as whether the print device is in power-saving mode, if the printer driver makes such information available.

This information is not available from the Printers And Faxes window. In this practice, you will configure printer pooling and configure a second logical printer to a single network-attached printer.
